Welcome to Resource and Environmental Planning at Simon Fraser University.
REM is one of Canada’s first interdisciplinary programs focusing on resource and environmental management. Since its beginning in 1979, REM has grown into a large integrated research and teaching school offering PhD, masters and undergraduate courses. REM has gained an international reputation for research and teaching in a number of areas including resource planning, dispute resolution, fisheries, forest ecology, energy, environmental impact assessment, recreation and environmental toxicology.
The REM planning program is accredited as a recognized planning program by the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) and the Planning Institute of BC (PIBC). Students who choose to complete the planning program are eligible for membership in CIP and PIBC as certified professional planners. Students who wish to enter the planning program must contact the Graduate Program Assistant. Advantages of planning certification include improved employment prospects for positions requiring planning certification, participation in conferences and workshops, and access to professional development programs. The REM planning program is distinctive in Canada by virtue of its focus on the policy, economic and science aspects of natural resource and environmental planning.
