Mark Roseland, Ph.D., MCIP, is Director of the Centre for Sustainable Community Development at Simon Fraser University and Professor in SFU’s School of Resource and Environmental Management.

Dr. Roseland has published widely, and his work has been cited in numerous journals. Over 12,000 copies of his book Toward Sustainable Communities: Resources for Citizens and Their Governments were first distributed internationally by the Government of Canada’s National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy; a revised and updated third edition of this landmark book was published by New Society Publishers in 2005. Dr. Roseland has been awarded over 30 funded research projects from a wide range of sources. In addition to his research contributions, Dr. Roseland’s teaching also has a direct impact on sustainable community development through his focus on research topics for his students that address current planning and development initiatives.

At SFU, Dr. Roseland has chaired the Community Advisory Committee (CAC) of the Simon Fraser University Community Trust, and serves on the Trust’s Board of Directors responsible for the UniverCity sustainable community development project. Dr. Roseland teaches courses on sustainable community development that have focused on projects such as the City of Vancouver’s model sustainable community being developed at Southeast False Creek, the SFU UniverCity project, the Vancouver-Whistler 2010 Olympic Bid, the City of North Vancouver Historic Shipyards Precinct, and carbon neutrality at SFU. Dr. Roseland lectures internationally and advises communities and governments on sustainable development policy and planning. He was the North American Editor of the international journal Local Environment, and continues to serve on its Editorial Advisory Board.

Dr. Roseland’s research and professional interests include sustainable community development, community and regional planning, planning theory and planning practice. Currentprojects include: Bolivian Specialization in Community Economic Development (CIDA, 2007-2012), and The Social Economy in British Columbia and Alberta (SSHRC, 2006-2011).
