Water Resource Management in Given the importance of water to human and ecosystem survival, water shortages are an important environmental concern. There is already evidence that the world is facing a growing challenge in maintaining water quality and meeting the rapidly growing demand for water resources. Within the Middle East, one of the most water scarce regions of the world, Israel is currently utilizing over 100% of its renewable freshwater resources. In addition, population pressures, increases in per capita demand, water quality problems and peace discussion on water allocations are creating additional pressure. These circumstances have fuelled a massive research effort towards addressing water issues, however, most studies have focused either on the politics of water scarcity or the financial and technical aspects of a water project. This project attempts to look comprehensively at the environmental impacts of various water options in Israel to determine how to best incorporate them into project assessment. First, three water supply projects will be discussed, namely, desalination, the reuse of treated wastewater in agriculture and groundwater mining. Second, their environmental impacts will be identified and last, an attempt will be made to quantify the impacts. Publications/Presentations: |
