Ashley came to REM in Fall 2007 with an interest in natural resource
management focusing on ecological economics and land-use planning.
Her master’s research consists of an economic valuation of the natural
water purification service of temperate
coastal rainforests. A lack of knowledge currently exists with respect to
a forested ecosystem’s economic contribution to the production of clean
drinking water. As a result, such forests remain highly undervalued. Her work
will therefore help natural resource managers better determine the proper
opportunity cost associated with competing land-uses.
