B.Sc. Environmental Science (2005), University of Ottawa, Ottawa
Master's Candidate, School of Resource and Environmental Management, Simon
Fraser University
Neil holds a B.Sc. in Environmental Science from the University of Ottawa,
with a focus on conservation biology. His research interests include
community based planning and development with respect to conservation of
biodiversity. Given his multi-disciplinary interests - REM was a perfect
match for pursuing his graduate degree and he joined REM in 2006.
For his REM research project, Neil is comparing various strategies for the in
situ conservation of Himalayan musk deer.
More specifically, he is evaluating the economic feasibility of a
hypothetical community based wildlife management project where local
communities are given harvesting rights to manage populations, and comparing
this to a payment for performance approach where community members are simply
paid to enforce and remove the threats of poaching. The results from this
research are expected to contribute to the dialogue surrounding musk deer
conservation among stakeholders.
