Faculty

The Environment and Development Research Group is led by Duncan Knowler. Dr. Knowler is a natural resource and environmental economist with expertise in the environment and development field. In addition to Dr. Knowler, the School of Resource and Environmental Management includes many other faculty members with experience and expertise related to the environment and development:

• Wolfgang Haider - is interested in social science survey methods, quantitative analysis, and trade-off modelling, as they relate to decision making in resource management. His research focuses on protected areas management, outdoor recreation and recreational fishing, resource based tourism, and land use planning.
• Evelyn Pinkerton - conducts research on the role of institutions in natural resource management with a particular focus on fisheries. The Co-management Research Group, led by Dr. Pinkerton, is involved in research projects in Mexico and the Caribbean.
• Mark Jaccard - is a resource and environmental economist who specializes in energy and materials management issues and leads the Energy and Materials Research Group. His research group is currently involved in projects in China and Bangladesh.

In addition, the Development Group at Simon Fraser University connects faculty members from multiple departments at SFU based on their shared interest in international, Canadian, and/or local development issues and problems. The Group exists to provide mutual academic support, to exchange information and ideas, and to arrange conferences and projects.  Faculty members of the Development Group can also facilitate the connection of graduate students conducting research in the field of development, thus strengthening graduate programs.
