School of Resource & Environmental Management

Welcome to REM!

The School of Resource and Environmental Management (REM) at Simon Fraser University (SFU) is widely recognized as Canada’s top graduate school in its field. The School is part of the Faculty of Environment and is located in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada.

Environmental problems cannot be solved based only on narrow research conducted in single disciplines. Instead, solutions emerge from interactions among people drawn from both the social and natural sciences. REM therefore provides the opportunity to learn key aspects of the numerous disciplines that are essential for solving environmental problems.

Wolfgang Haider
Dr. Wolfgang Haider, Director of REM, died on August 24, 2015 from injuries suffered in a cycling accident. This is a huge loss for REM, and for Wolfgang’s family and friends. He was well-respected internationally as a researcher, well loved as a professor and mentor, and immensely devoted as a leader of our department. He was also a very good friend.

To commemorate Wolfgang’s dedication to his students and his lasting contributions to the field of natural resource management, Wolfgang’s family and SFU are establishing the Wolfgang Haider Fellowship Trust, which will provide scholarship support to graduate students in REM. Donations to the trust can be made electronically here. (the fund can be selected in the “donation designation” drop down box).

Alternatively, donations can be made by sending or delivering a cheque payable to Simon Fraser University to the REM main office (please note on the cheque that the donation is for the Wolfgang Haider Fellowship Trust).
